My Blog

I am going to use this blog to show my current and past 3d models that I have made. Hopefully I can get feedback from friends and maybe I can post some of the things I have learned. I have had a website in the past but I found it wasn't very easy to update as much as I wanted... Plus this is free and it is very convenient and practical to use. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you like my work.

My New Demo Reel

Joseph Blanco Demo Reel 2009 from article112 on Vimeo.

90% of my 3D models were made in Zbrush... Base Models where created in Maya. All Comped in After Effects.

-Statue based on Laocoon.

-Robot "Off World Trader" Original Concept based on image from book 50 Robots to Draw by Keith Thompson.

-Bird man character original concept by Melissa Workman.

-The Tormentor(the man with tentacles coming out of his back) was done for a contest at Mind Storm Labs. A concept character sheet was used that was provided from Mind Storm.

The rest came from my imagination:)

Model Pics

I uploaded some pics of some models on Flickr, you can see the full size if you click on photo link below the picture. The photo browser is a bit tricky in some web browsers so instead of clicking on the small thumbnails it helps to just click on the bigger picture and it will automatically load the next pic. I have also noticed problems with my layout on Internet Explorer so I guess you can say that this is site was composed for Firefox and Safari. Sorry for any inconvenience.

This is my newest creation and by far the most fun. Base mesh was created in Maya 8.5 and then sculpted and painted in Zbrush. Post compositing done in CS3. Click on picture for full resolution.

Skin Test Zbrush -The Veteran

This Is a test I did using Zmats on Zbrush 3.1. This head is going to be used in a bigger personal project that I have planned. The skin looks better than my mental ray render in zbrush:( To see full size click on the picture.

Mental Ray Test Maya 8.5

This is a test that I did for realistic skin. I got the render down to 2 minutes for a 1024 size image. There is still a lot to tweak but it's been a long night and I think this was a good start. Sorry about the Jpeg Compression I wasn't thinking.
The model is another work in progress hence the missing parts. You can see the full resolution by clicking on the image.

Maya 2008 and Displacement Tips

Well Maya 2008 has many bugs that I had to deal with so here are some of the fixes for MISSS_Fast_Skin Bump Missing and optimization flag fix and other things:

Also you need to have a check box checked to do 32 bit displacements in Maya 2008. This one held me back for a day and was really annoying. You can do that by going here Window > Settings/Preferences > Settings > Rendering > Mentalray preferences > use maya-style alpha detection in file textures. That will make the displacements work properly. Don't forget to turn feature displacement off and to use your Mental ray approximation editor. For 32 bit Displacements Alpha Gain should be set to 2.2 and Alpha Offset to -1.1. This doesn't change for 32 bit displacements. However you can mess up your render if you scale your model because 32 bit displacements are scale sensitive.

This was all enough for me to go back to 8.5. Good luck if you have no choice but to work with Maya 2008.

Video Stage6 Divx

Sweet Well I found a really good solution for posting video on here. You need to have the Divx codec but it really stands out. Go here to find out more: http://stage6.divx.com/
